Every other subject on the CPL syllabus is largely about knowing rules or facts. Air Navigation is different — it's a skill, built through repeated calculation, chart reading and practice.
What Air Navigation covers
At CPL level, Air Navigation teaches you to plan and calculate an aircraft's route using aeronautical charts, navigation instruments, and dead-reckoning — working out position and heading from known speed, time and wind. You'll work with topics like great circle and rhumb line tracks, magnetic variation, chart projections, and time and fuel calculations for a planned flight.
Why students find it difficult
Unlike Regulations or Technical General, you can't shortcut Navigation by memorising facts. Every question is a small calculation problem, and a single arithmetic slip changes the answer. Most students who struggle with this paper haven't put in enough repetition on the calculations themselves — understanding the theory isn't the same as being fast and accurate under exam conditions.
Timed practice on real chart problems, not just reading theory. This is one of the reasons our exam portal tracks accuracy and speed separately, so you can see which one is holding a score back.
CPL vs ATPL navigation
CPL Air Navigation builds the core skill. At ATPL level, General Navigation goes further — long-haul, multi-sector flying, and navigation over oceanic and remote airspace where you can't rely on ground-based references in the same way.
How we teach it
Navigation is taught in-person at our Narayanguda centre by working captains who use the same charts and calculations in their actual flying. Enrolled students also get recorded lectures for revision and repeated practice through our exam portal ahead of the DGCA paper.
